“Someone firebombed a Planned Parenthood clinic in McKinney, Texas, late Tuesday night. Because it was so late, no one was hurt. The clinic doesn’t provide abortions, but there had been protesters there earlier that day anyway. You might’ve read about the news on Twitter or on a liberal blog. Probably not in a newspaper or on a cable new channel. Definitely not at any right-wing blogs. Which is a bit odd, actually, considering how much attention terrorist attacks generally get in this country. Oh, sorry, how much attention possible Islamic terrorist attacks get.”—
It’s also interesting to look how left-wing, or more specifically, eco-defense and animal liberation direct actions like this are demonized as terrorist attacks and are in every publication imaginable. I remember when all of the stuff with Walter Bond came up, I was seeing it being written about in news papers and talked about on tv everywhere.
If something like this were to ever make it on the President’s desk, I want cops to wear cameras on their uniform that record from the second they clock in to the second they clock out and their GPS information publicly available. I also want the President’s and all representatives’ web histories and their entire schedules available to the public with names of those on the phone and in meetings. Fuck this noise. We’re not the ones who need to be watched. We’re not the ones who fucked up the country.
“It’s now easier to buy homes on credit, find a job and access higher education in Mexico," Sacramento’s Mexican consul general, Carlos González Gutiérrez, said Wednesday. "We have become a middle-class country.”—
Doctor Who executive producer Steven Moffat reassured fans alarmed by a Comic-Con trailer that suggested an upcoming episode would have the time-traveling doctor helping Adolf Hitler. In the clip from the upcoming midseason premiere, Hitler seemingly thanks the Doctor for saving his life.
“I think we can unequivocally say we’re against Hitler,” Moffat told critics at the Television Critics Association’s press tour about the episode, titled Let’s Kill Hitler. “I think the worst thing you can do to that awful man is take the mickey out of him on Doctor Who. Don’t worry, we’re not going to save Hitler.”
And what if a fictional show did save Hitler? This is fucking dumb.
“It is easier to destroy than to build democracy. Concerted assaults on democracy over four decades serve the ends of those who deem it their right to rule and reign: Republican religious ideologues and acolytes of Milton Friedman economics. Disaster capitalists precipitate crises by running up huge deficits (during the Reagan and Bush one and two regimes), followed by demands for balanced budgets and deficit reduction, as a means of drastically cutting domestic spending and gutting public education, government jobs and public pensions and shifting all wealth upward.”—America Held Hostage to Two-Party Failure: Government of, by and for the Corporations | Truthout
“Does anyone else walking around feeling completely abnormal? I walk around and I just feel absolutely insane when I interact and I’m walking on the street and I’m looking at whatever the hell is going on and I’m like “God damn. I should be in an institution.” Most people in institutions could be actually normal in a real sense. They just can’t deal with the fucking insanity that we deal with today.”—
“U.S. lawmakers are providing a sad spectacle,” said (Carlos) Vegh at the University of Maryland. “When you add this ridiculous stalemate over raising the debt ceiling to the less than stellar response to the financial crisis, it confirms the impression that the U.S. is regressing and becoming more like an emerging country.”—Analysis: U.S. downgrade minor threat next to default prospect | Reuters
“A small majority of economists — 30 out of 53 — surveyed over the past two days said the United States will lose its AAA credit rating from one of the three big ratings agencies — Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s or Fitch.”—U.S. likely to lose top rating: economists | Reuters
On July 26th, climate activist Tim DeChristopher will be sentenced at the Salt Lake City federal courthouse – after being found guilty of 2 federal felonies for peacefully disrupting an oil and gas lease auction.
By raising his bidder paddle that day, Tim actually shed light on the illegality of a rushed auction, clearly a parting gift from the Bush administration to the fossil fuel industry. Yet during his trial, Tim was was never allowed to tell the jury about the illegitimacy of the auction or about his attempts to raise the funds to pay for the land he had won. Furthermore, he was strictly forbidden from even mentioning climate change and the moral imperatives motivating his action!
“Mr. Obama got on those knees again Monday night, on national television no less, and once again begged the GOP to devour Social Security and Medicare. He gobbled up the flawed, flayed premise of the far-right’s deranged argument, again, and pleaded for the chance to give away the core of what he was elected to defend.”—So This Is Despair | Truthout
