
The Emancipation Proclamation was signed on September 22, 1862, but it was pretty much ignored in the Southern states, since they were at war with the rest of the country. Although the war ended on April 9, 1865, it wasn’t until federal troops arrived in Texas on June 19th that the Proclamation could finally be enforced everywhere. That date became known as Juneteenth and is celebrated by many people as the true end to slavery in America.
